Our Approach to Shower Installation in Adelaide
The shower is the most-used element in any bathroom. A shower that doesn't drain properly, has a screen that won't seal, or a thermostat that can't maintain temperature is a source of daily frustration. A shower that's properly waterproofed, well-drained, frameless, and fitted with a quality thermostatic mixer is a genuinely pleasant experience twice a day for the next twenty years.
At Barco Build, shower installation is never just about the screen and the rose. A properly installed shower starts with drainage planning. The drain position determines the floor fall, the fall determines the tile layout, and the tile layout affects the visual outcome of the entire space. Getting this sequence right at the planning stage avoids the expensive compromises that happen when drainage is placed without thought for what comes after.
The move from traditional bath-over-shower combinations to dedicated walk-in showers is one of the most common renovations we undertake across Adelaide. Homeowners in suburbs like Norwood, Burnside, Unley, and Glenelg often have 1980s or 1990s bathrooms with a large bath they never use and a cramped shower-over-bath combination that doesn't drain well, doesn't ventilate properly, and has an aging fibreglass shell that no longer looks good. Removing the bath and installing a purpose-built walk-in shower converts this wasted space into something that works well and looks exceptional.
For the shower screen, we almost exclusively recommend frameless or semi-frameless tempered glass (10mm minimum) over traditional framed screens. The reasons are practical as much as aesthetic — frameless screens have fewer surfaces where soap scum accumulates, no aluminium channels that go black with mould, and no moving parts that wear out. They're also easier to seal correctly at the base because there's no frame interfering with the silicone application.
Every shower installation we do includes full waterproofing to AS 3740, flood-tested before tiling begins.

How It Works
-
Design & Drainage Planning
Shower drainage position determines everything — it can't easily be moved later. We plan the correct drain location, fall, and screen type before anything is fixed.
-
Recess Construction
Build or strip back the shower recess, ensuring walls are true and the floor is set to the correct fall for drainage.
-
Full Waterproofing
Complete membrane system applied to the full shower recess floor and walls to the required height. Flood-tested before tiling.
-
Tiling
Floor and wall tiles laid, including any niches and feature strips. Correct non-slip tile specification for shower floors.
-
Screen & Fixtures
Frameless or semi-frameless shower screen installed and sealed. All water-mixing fixtures, shower rose, and handshower connected and tested.

Frequently Asked Questions
Framed screens use a thin aluminium channel around the perimeter of the glass, which gives structure but adds a visual frame that can look dated and accumulate soap scum. Frameless screens use thicker tempered glass (10–12mm) with minimal hardware — they look cleaner, are easier to clean, and last longer. Semi-frameless screens fall between these, using minimal framing on one or two edges. Most of our clients opt for frameless or semi-frameless for both aesthetics and practicality.
Yes — removing the bath and converting to a walk-in shower is one of the most popular bathroom upgrades we do. It frees up significant floor space, makes cleaning easier, and gives the bathroom a more contemporary feel. The drainage needs to be in the right position, which we assess during consultation. The bath waste can often be repurposed if the drain positions work out, which can reduce cost.
A linear drain is a long, narrow drainage channel (typically running across the entry to the shower or along one wall) rather than a traditional central circular drain. It allows the floor tiles to run in a single direction with a single even fall toward the drain — cleaner looking and particularly useful with large-format tiles where cutting around a central circular drain looks clumsy. We use linear drains in most of our walk-in shower designs.
Adelaide's mains water pressure is generally moderate — adequate for most overhead shower roses but occasionally disappointing for rain-style heads that need higher flow to work well. If your property has a pressure-reduction valve, this can further limit performance. We assess pressure during consultation and recommend fixtures that will work well with your actual supply. In some cases a pressure booster may be an option worth considering.
The Building Code of Australia specifies a minimum internal shower dimension of 900×900mm. In practice, a shower at this minimum feels cramped — we recommend 1000×1000mm as a comfortable minimum for a single-person shower, and 1200×900mm or larger if you want to feel genuinely spacious. Walk-in wet rooms (where the entire floor area is tiled and falls to a drain, with no screen) can be larger still and work particularly well in compact bathrooms where a screen would visually divide the space.
Frameless screens are the lowest-maintenance shower enclosure type. The main tasks are: squeegee the glass after each shower to prevent water spotting (particularly important in Adelaide where the water is moderately hard), check and re-apply the silicone seal at the base annually or whenever it shows signs of lifting, and clean the glass monthly with a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scourers that scratch the glass. With basic maintenance, a quality frameless screen should look excellent for 15+ years.
